Mangler Squigs
I recently had the pleasure of painting up a pair of Mangler Squigs on commission for a Warhammer: The Old World player, and I’ve got to say-this project was an absolute blast from start to finish.
For those not deep into the greenskin madness, Mangler Squigs are basically what happens when regular Squigs (already pretty unhinged) get chained together and unleashed as living wrecking balls. In the lore, Squigs are fungus-based creatures bred by Goblins, used for everything from food to warfare. Mangler Squigs take things to the next level-barely controlled, extremely dangerous, and just as likely to eat their handlers as the enemy.
Painting them was genuinely fun. The models are full of character, with exaggerated motion and tons of little storytelling details. I especially enjoyed working on the base-it’s packed with personality. The mushrooms with tiny faces give it that classic Warhammer whimsy, and there’s this brilliant little scene with a terrified Snotling clutching a fly agaric mushroom like it might somehow save him. Spoiler: it won’t.
One of my favorite custom touches is inside the mouth of one of the Manglers. There’s a human arm sticking out-belonging to some poor unfortunate soul who clearly became a snack but didn’t quite get fully digested yet. That idea actually came from the Warhammer: Invasion card game, specifically a card featuring a Cave Squig. I loved that visual and knew I had to include something similar here.
From a technical standpoint, the biggest challenge was definitely assembling the models. These are very dynamic sculpts, and getting everything to line up properly-especially with one of the Squigs essentially hanging on chains-took some patience. But once everything was in place, it was totally worth it.
All in all, a super enjoyable project with loads of character. Always happy to paint something this chaotic and full of life!
